Homework Policy
Why I assign homework: I believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. I give homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, helps me to identify where students need additional instruction, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits.
When homework will be assigned: Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday nights. Assignments should take students no more than 45 minutes each night, not including studying for tests, nightly reading, and working on projects. I will give students advanced notice to study for all tests and parents will be given advanced written notification of all upcoming projects or reports in students' planners.
Student's homework responsibilities: I expect students to do their best job on their homework. I expect homework to be completed neatly. I expect students to do the work on their own and only ask for help after they have given their best effort. I expect that all assignments will be turned in on time.
Teacher's homework responsibilities: I will check all homework. This does not mean that a GRADE will be assigned to all homework assignments. I strongly believe in the value positive support plays in motivating children to develop good study habits.
Parent's homework responsibilities: Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore, I appeal to parents to make homework a top priority, provide necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time, provide praise and support, not let children avoid homework, and contact me if problems arise. Parents are to also sign student's planners each night upon completion of homework assignments. This helps to ensure that parents are aware of homework being assigned, and students have completed the assignment(s) correctly.
If students do not complete homework: If students choose not to complete and turn in homework on time, they also choose to lose part of their recess for that day. The homework assignment will either be completed during the missed recess period, or will be added to that night's homework assignment(s). If homework is consistently forgotten or incomplete, parents will be contacted. Homework demerits will be assigned for incomplete homework. If there is a legitimate reason why a student isn't able to finish homework, please send a note to me on the day the homework is due. The note must be signed by a parent.
